Un grande che se ne va, e ci sentiamo gia' piu' soli senza di lui..
Un "faro" del suo campo, un vero appassionato, che ha anche avuto la fortuna di fare tutta la vita cio' che noi sognamo:provare e provare e provare le Porsche da sogno.

Ho avuto la fortuna di conoscerlo a Milano alla presentazione del suo libro, una persona molto gentile e simpatica.
dovrebbe esserci qualche vecchio thread con anche le foto scattate nell'occasione mentre ci autografava i libri.

On a appris le décès survenu samedi à l'âge de 91 ans, de l'ancien pilote automobile belge Paul Frère, vainqueur des 24 heures du Mans avec Olivier Gendebien sur Ferrari en 1960.
Paul Frère a aussi notamment remporté les 12 Heures de Reims avec Gendebien en 1957 et 1958. Né au Havre, en France, le 30 janvier 1917, Paul Frère a disputé onze Grand Prix de Formule 1, entre 1952 et 1956, terminant deuxième, également sur Ferrari, derrière l'Anglais Peter Collins (Ferrari), du Grand Prix de Belgique à Francorchamps en 1956.
Il avait bouclé le championnat des conducteurs en 7-ème position avec 6 points cette année là. Le titre était revenu au célèbre Argentin Juan Manuel Fangio (30 points). A son actif également, une victoire en F2 au GP d'Afrique du Sud (1960). La nouvelle de son décès figurait samedi dans les éditions en ligne des quotidiens La Dernière heure - Les Sports et Le Soir.
Champion de Belgique des conducteurs, et médaille d'argent du Mérite Sportif 1955, Paul Frère a également tâté avec succès de l'aviron, récoltant trois titres nationaux en quatre sans barreur (1946 et 1947) et avec barreur en 1946, sous les couleurs du Sport Nautique Universitaire de Bruxelles.
Ingénieur en automobile, il brilla avec sa plume dans les chroniques de revues spécialisées, et était consultant des plus grands constructeurs mondiaux.
Il n'avait pratiquement rien perdu de ses qualités de pilote à... 87 ans, et le prouva au Mans en réalisant des chronos du plus haut niveau au volant de l'Audi S8, dans laquelle il roulait pour la première fois, et qui allait remporter la course avec le trio Biela - Kristensen - Pirro. Il ne s'est cependant jamais vraiment remis d'un grave accident au Nurbürgring il y a quelques mois.

We've just received word that racer and Road & Track contributor Paul Frère has died yesterday at the age of 91.

"Paul Frère (January 30, 1917 - February 23, 2008) was a former racing driver and journalist from Belgium. He participated in eleven World Championship Formula One Grands Prix, debuting on 22 June 1952. He achieved one podium, and scored a total of eleven championship points. He also participated in several non-Championship Formula One races.
He also won the 1960 24 Hours of Le Mans, driving for Ferrari with fellow Belgian teammate Olivier Gendebien.
After 1960, he acts up to the present time as a car journalist based in Europe. Especially, in Japan, he has a lot of acquistants with the vehicle design engineers in Honda and Mazda.
Only weeks before his 90th birthday in January 2007, the European Editor for Road & Track magazine, who is also working as a consultant to automobile manufacturers, caused a road accident near the Nürburgring and was badly injured, having to spend 14 days in intensive care."
Paul Frère was also editor at Flat 6 Magazine, the number one Porsche magazine in France.

Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart mourns a great journalist and racing driver: Paul Frère has died at the age of 91. Anton Hunger, Porsche’s Head of Press and Public Relations, paid tribute to the deceased: “Paul Frère lived life at racing speed. Whether as an engineer, a race driver or a journalist, he was a man who commanded the widespread admiration of the international motoring scene. With his passing, Porsche loses a connoisseur of many years, who actively accompanied the enterprise and its products from their beginnings right up to the present day.”
A Belgian citizen, Paul Frère was born in 1917 in the French town of Le Havre. He made his way into motor sport in the late 1940s and subsequently drove for various different teams. He started for the first time for Porsche in 1953 with Richard von Frankenberg in a Porsche 550 Spyder at Le Mans, where he gained a best of class victory. In the 1958 Le Mans, together with Edgar Barth in a Porsche 718 RSK, he finished in fourth place overall, besides winning best of class in the category up to 1500 cubic centimeters.
In parallel to his career as a racing driver, in 1945 he began a career in freelance journalism and was much in demand as an expert worldwide. Paul Frère continued his activities as a journalist and test driver to a ripe old age and wrote various books on automobiles, including the “Porsche 911 Story”, a standard work which is in print to this day. An enthusiastic aficionado of the sports cars from Zuffenhausen, he was still driving his first Porsche – a 356 – as well as an Indian red 911 Carrera in the last years of his life.

We're saddened to report the passing of Paul Frère, veteran racer and revered elder statesman of automotive journalism.
Frère was born on January 30, 1917 in Belgium. As a racing driver, Frère competed in Formula One between 1952 and 1956, and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1960 behind the wheel of a Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa. As an automotive journalist, Frère served as European editor for Road & Track, and as editor of French Porsche magazine Flat 6, in addition to authoring several books about cars and racing. In September 2006, we reported on a major accident Frère had near the Nurburgring in Germany, from which he recovered after spending two weeks in intensive care having punctured both lungs and broken several bones.
Frère died this past Saturday at age 91. We extend our appreciation to Steven who informed us to the sad news, and our deepest condolences to Paul's bereaved family and friends. He will be sorely missed.

Onore al Grandissimo Paul...il più grande gentleman e mito della 911 !!!
Con il suo libro "il mito di Stoccarda", nella ultima edizione, vera bibbia per la 911, ho scoperto tantissime ed interessanti notizie su quella straordinaria quanto unica vera auto che è la 911.

una vita vissuta pienamente, appagante, preclusa a molti.
Credo sia stato felice più di una volta, questo è quello che conta di più, quando fai un bilancio di te stesso
in principio era la commistione dei quattro elementi AriaTerraAcquaFuoco (Empedocle,V sec. a.C.) vennero poi il quinto e il sesto, e tutto l'Orbe stupì : unici contrapposti che non si mossero guerra (anonimo,XXI sec. d.C.)
