The rasp of the flat-6 engine gets angry as we go for another gear.
The steering wheel feels alive in our hands, sending us a strong message from the asphalt beneath the tires.
We look out through the upright windscreen across the low nose of the car and the road dances in front of us.
We could only be in a Porsche 911, and this feels like the ultimate 911 — agile, light and the perfect partner for speed by a lone driver.

But wait a second, this ultimate 911 is actually a 1994 Porsche 993 C4 CAB, the last of the rear-engine breed with an air-cooled engine .............
il controsterzo non è il modo più veloce per percorrere una curva, ....... ma certamente è il più divertente!

993 Turbo
10 Years on we enjoy the last air-cooled 911 Turbo

We are celebrating a rather unique anniversary – not the passing of ten years since a car’s conception but rather a decade since ist demise. What better excuse to spend the day
with a 993 Turbo?

They said you should never meet your heroes; that they’ll be old,fat and possibly senile and you’ll be heartbroken because the person that you’ve built up throughout your whole life will turn out to be a huge disappointment. It’s supposed to be the same for cars, minus the senility and that your dream car should remain just that- a dream.
Today, I get to meet one of my childhood motoring heroes, one that I hold very close to my heart.
A car that in company such as these outlandish exotics, faded into visual obscurity and yet one which for me, was something very special. That car was the 993 Turbo.

Before you even step inside the 993, it’s clear that it’s a car which hails from another era. It’s the size that gives it away, because this generation of Turbo is extremely compact with barely an inch of wasted space on the hole car. The proportions are perfect and it just looks right- it’s one of the best 911 ever as far as design is concerned. There are a number of elements that you just wouldn’t see on a modern car like the rain gutters, the offset mirrors or the red stripe across the rear but they all contribute to its inherent charm. It might not look as super as it once did,but it’s still a special car.

Slide into the soft accomodating seat and close the light door behind you with the kind of clunk you just wouldn’t hear on a modern car; Then take a few moments to acclimatise yourself with your surrounding. The first thing that strikes you is the dash, or lack of it – it’s absolutely tiny, barely more than a couple of inches deep. The large steering wheel doesn’t adjust in any direction at all, meaning you have to a task which is not made any easier by the pedals which are seriously offset towards the centre of the car, as well as being floor hinged.

We finally reach a more normal stretch of road that’s long, straight and empty and just begging for something to tear across its inviting tarmac and I’m only too happy to oblige.
Gingerly I give the throttle a clumsy squeeze, not more than half way, and in an istant the Turbo is piling on the speed. I short-shift and squeeze again, more throttle this time, and the speedo needle soars around the dial. The car is bucking over the undulating surface, the steering wheel writhing in my hands and it suddenly strikes me that driving the useable supercar is a hands-on experience. You’re extremely busy behind the wheel as the car moves around beneath you, the 18-inch wheels reacting to seemingly every tiny surface imperfection and it makes you feel you’re very much part of the whole experience.
It’s funny , I’d allways imagined the 993 Turbo to be a little soft around the edges, docile perhaps, soaking up the worst of what a road could throw at you and allowing you to deploy ist epic performance with ease, but the eyperience is so much more intense.

And so my time with the Turbo has come to an end. It’s surprised me in many ways but disappointed me in none and for that I’m grateful. I never expected the 993 Turbo to be bad, how could it be? But there was some small part of me that was worried about this meeting, worried that the Turbo simply couldn’t live up to the huge expectations that I had built up over the years and that I’d come away feeling empty, let down by the hero that I had so admired. But instead, I’ve come away more in love with the 993 Turbo than ever before.
It’s special in a way that no 996 or 997 will ever be and for those who hold the 911 Turbo in the highest regard, it will allways be the stuff of legend.

Here’s the cranium cruncher: today a low mileage 993 will command a similar sticker price as a used 996 Turbo. ( nota che l’articolo e‘ del 2005)
And there’s a sound reason for this – the 993 Turbo is a stormer of a 911.
Quite possible one of the best, and if I’d driven one before voting in our Greatest Porsche survey I’d have to retink my top three.

You quickly forget the hollow spokes, twin KKKs, the melted cheese look of the rear wing or the increased brake pressure thanks to the new electronics buried in the 993’s belly, Just open the door and feel the weight – light, but perfectly weighted as you would expect – and drop into the interior that coined the phrase hewn from solide granite. The leather Recaro-designed seats grip in all the right areas, not too tight but pinching your hips, hugging your shoulders and supporting your frame with the reassurance of a fatherly hand when you took your first stabiliser-free pedal bike journey. It feels like home, like you’re never been away, and no matter what they, or we, say, the 996 and 997 are light years behind the 993 for build quality.

It’s civilised for a 911 Turbo, but leaves you in no doubt as to ist heritage and reputation.
And that reputation comes to the fore when the oil is warmed through and you can resist no longer.Third gear, throttle open to give its all and the 993 takes off with such an explotion of thrust all you can do is keep her on course before dropping back in to fourth and preparing to experience it all over again. And again. And again when you hit top.

Of course, it could have something to do with the experience you’re having. The accelerative forces are one thing, the comunication of the 993 is another. There isn’t a surface you’ll cross that you don’t feel in this car; that airbagged wheel may be ugly but it can seduce you with its chit-chat. Where you want to ease off the throttle and reduce your pace with the turn-in approaching this 911 will build your confidence and carry so much more speed through a turn you’ll be questioning your masculinity if you consider slowing again.
I’d be schocked if a 993 Turbo couldn’t keep a 996 equivalent honest across a challenging route of fast, opening curves combined with more commited, undulating and heart-in-the-mouth terrain.

You have to pity the Weissach engineers given the task of improving on this.

Having spend just one day behind the wheel I can imagine the 993 driver waiting for the Eighties supercar to move aside and let it throug.

This is Porsche’s finest hour, Porsche’s finest supercar, make no mistake
