The SUV bubble is about to burst. No other conclusion can be drawn from the new Porsche Cayenne, a twin-turbocharged SUV that aims to answer this question: Is America ready to pay almost 90 grand to rocket the kids to the grocery store at 165 mph? Of course, the German automaker doesn't advocate this racetrack mentality for shopping excursions (even though the turbo version kicks out 460 pounds of torque and 440 horses, so you could if you wanted to). "The Cayenne will put the sport in sport utility vehicle," says Porsche North America spokesman Gary Fong. He's not kidding, but the company faces a serious marketing challenge in peddling this, uh, family car, which is due to hit U.S. streets early next year. From Porsche's perspective, the lure is obvious enough. Despite persistent economic malaise, U.S. sales of luxury SUVs are up 5 percent from last year. During the next half-decade, that hot market is expected to double, according to J.D. Power & Associates. And with all the extra goodies typical on these things -- such as standard leather, automatic retractable running boards, third-row seats that fold down at the touch of a button -- profit margins are almost as big as the SUVs themselves (reaching $8,000 per vehicle on some models). |
